In 2015, red occupied not only media screens but also artists' canvases.
Art at the time of conflict becomes a violent act itself.
While studying at Städelschule in Frankfurt and surrounded by daily news from Syria, Hijazi invited a group of art collectors attending a dinner at the academy to participate in a staged act of violence against a painting, using tools purchased from a military surplus and gift shop in Frankfurt am Main.
What began with hesitation gradually turned into engagement. The painting became a site onto which gestures of destruction, participation, spectatorship, and value were projected. Through the theatricalization of violence, the work reflects on the uneasy relationship between conflict, artistic production, and the systems through which art acquires meaning and value.
